Jay Electronica Misses Late ‘Suplexes’ Collaborator Mac Miller

Jay Electronica has paid homage to Mac Miller in a seemingly random moment, sharing with fans that his late collaborator is still on his mind four years after his death.

On Friday (December 23), the “A.P.I.D.T.A.” rapper made a rare appearance on Twitter to post the simple message, “I miss Mac Miller.” The tweet didn’t appear to mark any specific occasion, nor did Jay Electronica offer any further thoughts or memories about his fallen friend.

The post inspired several fans to share their own sadness about the loss of Miller, who died of an accidental drug overdose in 2018.

Among those joining Jay Electronica in the solemn moment was Lil B, who replied: “GOD BLESS YOU BOTH – Lil B,” prompting Jay Elec to give the Bay Area MC props of his own, writing: “Long Live The Based God.”

Jay Electronica appeared on Mac Miller’s 2013 track “Suplexes Inside of Complexes and Duplexes,” a fan favorite from the Pittsburgh rapper’s sophomore album Watching Movies with the Sound Off. While the two never released a video for the song, they famously performed the track together at the 2014 Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival, where Jay Electronica also brought out JAY-Z, Talib Kweli and J. Cole.

According to ABC 13, Miller once explained that the complexity and quality of Watching Movies, which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 200 albums chart, reflected the two years leading up to the project’s release. “There was always a lot more to me than what people wanted to say, that’s the only thing that ever bothered me,” Miller said.

While fans including Kevin Durant are waiting for a follow-up to 2020’s A Written Testimony, Jay Electronica has not given any indication as to if or when he might release a new album. He most recently appeared on a new track alongside MF DOOM, who recorded the song long before his death in 2020.

The track, “Barz Simpson,” is taken from the forthcoming project from London-based producer The Purist and UK rapper Sonnyjim titled White Girl Wasted.

Westside Gunn Hints At Jay Electronica Joining Griselda

According to a press release, the British Duo sent the song to MF DOOM (who spent most of his later life in London, where he was born) for 16 bars and got a full verse back a few days later. The album — which has yet to receive a release date, despite being in the works since 2018 — is also set to feature contributions from DJ Premier, Madlib and others.

“Barz Simpson” served as the third collaboration from Jay Electronica and MF DOOM following 2017’s “True Lightyears” and IDK’s “Red,” which dropped last year and also featured Westside Gunn.

Following DOOM’s unexpected death, Jay Electronica was among the throng of rap figures who paid tribute to the former KMD lyricist, with whom he shared Five-Percent Nation affiliation.

“May Allah be please w our Brother MF DOOM,” the Roc Nation rapper tweeted after the news was announced by DOOM’s wife on New Year’s Eve in 2020.
