Donald Glover Dubs “Atlanta” The “Curb Your Enthusiasm” For Rappers

The second season of Donald Glover’s hit FX show Atlanta premieres Thursday (March 1), which means the show’s creator is making the press rounds to get the word out.

Glover, formerly known as Childish Gambino, stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Wednesday (February 28) to chat about growing up as a Jehovah’s Witness, his music career and, of course, Atlanta.

When Colbert asked him if Paper Boi’s experiences as a rapper are inspired by Gambino’s own career, he explained, “Some of them are me. Some of them are my brother. Some are just the writer’s experiences. A lot of people picked up that this is Twin Peaks for rappers but it’s really Curb Your Enthusiasm for rappers.”

“Being a rapper is super awkward,” he added. “You’re in a video and you got like champagne and butts close to your face … and then you have to go to Whole Foods, and the person is like, ‘Hey you’re that dude’ and you’re like, ‘Please I really want to buy this ice cream,’ but they’re like, ‘Yo you gotta be you right now, so let’s take this picture.’ You’re like, ‘Ok.’ You have to be that wrestler face but in the real world all the time.”

Glover also talked about why he decided to play the role of Paper Boi’s manager instead of a rapper himself.

“Playing a rapper … that would have been wack to me,” he said. “That would have been so wack to me. That just feels wack. It just didn’t feel cool to me to actually make music and then make a show. I don’t think anybody wants to see a show about making it.”

His parents, who are strict Jehovah’s Witnesses, raised him according to their religious practices.

“I was taught the world was a bad place,” he said. “I wasn’t really allowed to watch T.V. I didn’t have birthdays. That’s a religion thing but I think with a bunch of kids, my mom was like that’s a lot of money to save.

“Magic’s not allowed. Card tricks, nothing like that. No Magic The Gathering. No Magic Johnson. No Magic Kingdom. None of it. All the little things a lot of people would get when they were younger were really fascinating to me as I got older.”

Initially, his parents didn’t understand what he was doing when he started his career working on TV shows like 30 Rock and Community. It didn’t coincide with their religious beliefs. In fact, it still doesn’t.

“When it first started, they just didn’t know what I was doing,” he said. “I think about it and it must have been so weird for them to come out to my plays like, ‘I’m doing this play and there’s this musician and this Klan member comes out.’ But they’re like, ‘Alright, we love you.’”

At the end of his appearance, Colbert brought out 6-year-old Girl Scout Charity Joy, who had remixed Gambino’s “Redbone” with her father to sell her Girl Scout cookies. Glover wound up buying 113 boxes of cookies on the show, helping Joy reach her sales goal.

“Childish Gambino is for the kids,” he said.

Atlanta: Robbin’ Season airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on FX.

A Tribe Called Quest Teases “Major Announcement”

A Tribe Called Quest —Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Consequence and Jarobi White — is evidently cooking up something special. On Thursday (March 1), the group’s collective Instagram account shared a vintage photo of Tip, Ali and the late Phife Dawg.

The caption read, “Major @atcq Announcement on Monday. Stay Tuned… #TheQuestIsOn #RIPPhifeDawg #WeLoveYouTRIBE.”

HipHopDX reached out to Jarobi who said, “No spoilers like Black Panther. You know how good we are about keeping [our] secrets. It’s ill though!”

Some of Reddit’s die-hard Tribe fans are theorizing the announcement will involve the long-awaited Phife Dawg solo album, while others are anticipating a new Tribe lineup that could possibly include longtime affiliate Busta Rhymes. Others joked it could be a Outkast and ATCQ dream project.

Last year, Tribe announced the Thank You For Your Service Tour was to be its last. The weight of Phife’s 2015 passing was too much to bare, which the Hip Hop legends explained in a statement to the L.A. Times after pulling a no-show at San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival.

Tribe played its final show at the Bestival 2017 in England last July.

Rae Sremmurd Unleash Trio Of Joint & Solo Songs

A release date for Rae Sremmurd’s upcoming album SR3MM has yet to be revealed, but the Atlanta duo — Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi — has offered another sample of what can be expected on the project.

On Thursday (March 1), the duo released three new tracks. Up first is “Powerglide,” which features Three 6 Mafia’s Juicy J and follows SR3MM‘s lead single, “T’d Up,” which dropped in February.

Those hoping to get their Rae Sremmurd fix on a more individual level are also in luck. Both Swae and Slim have solo albums to accompany the release of SR3MM (a triple LP). And they’ve released their own solo singles to coincide with the release of “Powerglide.”

Swae’s solo track is “Hurt To Look,” which appears on Swae’s solo album, Swaecation, while Slim released his Jxmtroduction joint “Brxnks Truck.”

Rae Sremmurd’s latest studio album, SremmLife 2, was released in 2016.

Safaree Owns Up To His Nudes But Denies Leaking Them

Former Love Hip Hop: Hollywood star Safaree Samuels says his leaked nudes, which punched the web’s thirst level into overdrive earlier this week,  weren’t part of any scheme for attention.

“It’s not something I want out there,” Samuels told The Breakfast Club during an interview on Wednesday (February 28). “My nieces follow me and watch everything I do … and my mom and my sisters [do as well]. People think I did that for promo.”

But Samuels did make it clear the image, which host Angela Yee had printed out in front of her, was him. He also noted he had a similar situation in the past, though it was a fake picture that time.

The leak was allegedly from Snapchat. As Samuels explained, he had been working hard on his pelvic muscle and took a photo of it on the platform without sharing it since Snapchat “has a better camera.” He denied sending the photo out himself, even giving his phone to Yee and allowing her to peruse through his DMs as proof.

The Breakfast Club cast had plenty of fun with the situation, joking often during the interview.

“The reviews have been good,” Charlamagne Tha God said. “This is the first time I’ve it seen it work for a man.”

Though Samuels continually denied leaking the images himself, he spent a majority of the interview making penis puns. He also mentioned interesting business propositions from sex toy manufactures and ultimately used the appearance to plug a new song, “Hunnid,” which was met with mixed reviews.

Rich The Kid Takes Aim At Lil Uzi Vert In New Diss Track

Rich The Kid went on Instagram Live on Tuesday (February 27) to preview a new track that many fans and commentators are quickly labeling a diss song aimed at Lil Uzi Vert.

The two artists have exchanged barbs this year, with Rich recently claiming Uzi was trying to copy his style.

#richthekid says #liluzivert is tryna look like him. FAXXXX or FICTION??

A post shared by DJ Akademiks (@akadmiks) on Feb 26, 2018 at 3:47am PST

Although he doesn’t mention Uzi by name, Rich’s new track features a few bars that are subliminally aimed at the Philadelphia-based rapper.

“All them dead friends/ You a middleman/ You a little man,” Rich spits in reference to the chorus of Uzi’s hit song “XO Tour Llif3.”

Rich later raps, “Your money getting shorter,” a clear jab at Uzi’s double platinum-selling single “Money Longer.”

Check out Rich’s preview of his new track below.
