Tory Lanez Is Tired Of Being Undermined

New York, NY – Tory Lanez has become fed up with people not showing him the respect he feels he deserves. During an appearance on Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne Tha God referenced some comments made by Joe Budden and his podcast crew “asking if it’s quiet for Tory Lanez.” In response, Lanez went on to ask what artists can go head-to-head with him on the rapping and singing end.

“Quiet with me for what?” Lanez asked. “Which rapper that’s out right now that y’all feel like I need to go head-to-head with on a cypher? What singer is out right now that I need to write better records than? Like, who is it? Point me in the direction and let’s just do it. And I’ma show why I out-work that nigga and why I’m better than that nigga.”

Lanez was visibly frustrated, explaining why he’s tired of his talents being overlooked and underestimated.

“What artist you know can do I what I fucking do?” he asked. “I’m tired of niggas undermining that.”

Lanez was appearing on the show to promote his sophomore album, Memories Don’t Die, which dropped on Friday (March 2).

Countdown To HipHopDX At SXSW: WishGRANTed

WishGRANTed is a rapper who brings something different to his live performances. With his saxophone and dance moves, the Baltimore native delivers an experience combining instrumental Hip Hop with dope lyrics, inspired by the likes of Kanye West, Big K.R.I.T. and J. Cole.

He dropped his “Famous” single last December, and has shared stages with the likes of Curren$y, Audio Push, Dave East and more. The D1 Entertainment signee will be releasing his debut EP in early spring.

WishGRANTed spoke to HipHopDX as he prepared to take the stage for DX’s showcase at the SXSW music festival on March 16.

Have you ever performed at SXSW before?

WishGRANTed: No, first time.

What are you most excited for performing at the festival?

Just the fact that I have a new audience to hear and see what I can do. I’m performing a lot of unreleased music, so it will let me know if this shit is good or not. It’s going to be a great experience. I want to make people feel the way I felt the first time I heard Anderson .Paak.

Do you plan on watching other performances? Which ones are you most likely to see?

Yes, I’m not sure about a ton of people performing, but I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing some dope stuff.

What’s been the best and/or worst part of preparing for the performances?

The best part is that I’m even preparing for it. There’s nothing bad about it. I’ve always wanted to perform at SXSW, so the fact that I’m even doing this interview is crazy.

What was your first show outside your hometown and what was the best memory of it?

My first show out of town was in Miami. The best part was I shut that motherfucker down. I only got five minutes and had people asking if I was signed. It set the tone for what we supposed to be doing now. Seeing people’s reaction afterward really caught me off guard because it showed me that this can really work. My manager was living with a pretty popular pornstar at the time, so that was pretty memorable too.

What was your first paid gig?

My first paid gig was opening for Bone Thugs-n-Harmony at the Howard Theatre in D.C.

What was the best article you’ve ever read in HipHopDX?

The Top Rap Albums of 2017 was a solid one. The list was dope ’cause it didn’t just throw a bunch of huge names on there. I would have put Big K.R.I.T. higher. That album was fire.

If you’ve watched The Breakdown, what was your favorite episode?

The most interesting one I’ve seen recently was the fake vs. real Hip Hop. This is something I argue with people about all the time. The thing is it’s all Hip Hop, it’s just different ways to express perspectives. Who am I to say “mumble rap” isn’t Hip Hop? Clearly, it is to somebody.

Producer EOM Passes Away

Virginia producer EOM aka Element Of Music has passed away due to complications from scleroderma, an autoimmune disease. EOM’s longtime collaborator Wax announced the sad news via social media on Sunday (March 4).

“I am heartbroken to share the news that Daniel Carey aka EOM has passed away due to complications from Scleroderma,” he wrote. “Daniel touched a lot of people with his personality and even more with the absolutely beautiful music that he created. I love you brother and I miss you so much.

EOM was probably best known for his work with Wax (a former Def Jam signee), but the talented producer worked with a variety of prominent Hip Hop artists over the course of his career. Anderson .Paak, Blu, Chamillionaire, Mega Ran, Dumbfoundead, Asher Roth, Shad and Sene are just a few of the MCs that collaborated with EOM.

His most recent release, Danielito, dropped in November and was his first project to feature his skills on the mic instead of strictly behind the boards. Danielito, like much of the producer’s discography, can be streamed for free via his Bandcamp page.

Countdown To HipHopDX At SXSW: Jack Harlow

Jack Harlow is a 19-year-old rapper who credits his career in the music industry to the video game Guitar Hero. Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, Harlow rose quickly with his breakout song “Ice Cream,” which helped his debut mixtape, 18, rack up millions of streams.

Harlow followed up by hitting the studio harder than ever and releasing his Gazebo debut album.  It received rave reviews from heavy hitters such as DJ Drama, who will be sharing the stage with Harlow this year at DX’s SXSW showcase.

Before Jack hits the SXSW stage, HipHopDX had a chance to catch up with him and learn what he’s most looking forward to at this year’s festival.

HipHopDX: Have you performed at SXSW before? What makes this year different?

Jack Harlow: Once last year and more following a new project … doing better shows.

What are you most excited for performing at the festival?

They got this pizza spot with $2 slices. They’re huge and good!

Do you plan on watching other performances?

It’s moreso a convention, so I go to see and catch a vibe. Who knows who I’ll see.

What’s been the best and/or worst part of preparing for the performances?

I’ve had a set prepared, so I feel good about it; no bad feelings.

There are thousands of artists performing at SXSW. Why should people come and see you?

Because I have the best songs.

What was your first show outside your hometown and what was the best memory of it?

Department Store in Atlanta. I was on spring break in high school and came on my own. Performed there met a lot of people. It was pretty cool because Department Store closed right after I left, so it was cool I performed there.

What was your first paid gig?

Had a show at a small bar when I was like 15/16. Probably 50 people came. It was pretty tight. Walked out of there with like $200.

What’s one unique fact that you want your fans to know about you?

I sleep in my jeans.
