Q-Tip To Teach Jazz & Hip Hop Course At NYU

New York, NY – Q-Tip is bringing his jazz rap expertise to the classroom. New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music has announced the A Tribe Called Quest co-founder will be teaching a course about the connections between jazz and Hip Hop this fall.

“We’re thrilled to have Q-Tip join the faculty of The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music,” Jason King, associate professor and director of Writing, History Emergent Media Studies at the Clive Davis Institute, said in a press release. “In searching for instructors to teach in our program, our aim is to always bring top-flight working professionals to the classroom who have made a major impact in their fields.

“That’s why we’re so excited to welcome Q-Tip, since he’s a peerless icon who redefined hip-hop for generations to come and brought jazz to the genre, especially through his contribution with A Tribe Called Quest. He also has a natural instinct for teaching and cultivating excellence in students in terms of their focus on craft and expressive style. It’s going to be transformative to have him on board.”

The teaching role adds another wrinkle to the résumé of Q-Tip, who was named the Artistic Director for Hip Hop Culture by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2016.

“I couldn’t be more excited to share with the students what I know and I look forward to them also teaching me,” he said. “Teaching is an exchange of sharing and receiving for all involved.”

Q-Tip’s class begins on September 5 and will run through the fall semester.

Jeezy Ordered To Pay $111K Over “I Ball I Stunt” Track

Jeezy has been ordered to pay well over $100,000 for allegedly stealing the 2011 song “I Ball I Stunt,” according to TMZ.

The publication, citing legal documents, reports an individual named Edaz Redden sued Jeezy over the track back in 2015.

Redden claims he gave a demo of the song to a producer, and later saw the same title, composition and chorus on Jeezy’s track, which appeared on the Atlanta rapper’s 2011 mixtape, The Real Is Back.

Jeezy reportedly claims he was never properly served, but the judge presiding over the case entered a default judgment in favor of Redden.

This isn’t Jeezy’s only legal skirmish in recent times. Back in April of 2017, The Snowman was slapped with a wrongful death lawsuit after a concert promoter was shot dead at a show he performed at in 2014. At the time, an eyewitness reportedly told police the perpetrator looked like Jeezy and later picked his photo out of a lineup in 2016. Jeezy was never formally charged with a crime.

Jeezy was again caught in legal trouble in February of last year when a promoter sued him for $100,000 when he reportedly pocketed a $30,000 deposit after skipping out on a show in Houston, Texas.

Jeezy later countersued in the case for $1 million, accusing the promoter of hurting his reputation.

Twitter Clowns Killer Mike For Failed Attempt At Calling Out MSNBC’s Joy Reid

Killer Mike is having a rough time on social media. Less than a month after becoming a trending topic for his controversial appearance on the National Rifle Association’s television channel, the Run The Jewels member is being slammed again for a botched attempt at exposing MSNBC’s Joy Reid on Instagram.

Reid was one of Mike’s most prominent critics following his infamous interview with NRATV, and it seems the veteran MC was waiting for her to slip up. The MSNBC host wrote “HM” in an Instagram post, and Mike assumed she was supporting the fashion retailer that caused an uproar for its racist advertisement. Unfortunately for him, this wasn’t the case.

And not to be outdone… @glamluxxe and Cynthia, who rocked the HM for our Elgin Baylor shoot! #AMJoy #GlamSquad

A post shared by Joy-Ann Reid (@joyannreid) on Apr 7, 2018 at 10:23pm PDT

“So me doing an interview about black Gun Ownership with the NRA is “bad,” but you promoting a company that tagged a black child a monkey is ‘good, cool, acceptable,’ Mike commented. “Ok check. Smh niggas.”

Reid clapped back by noting HM is an abbreviation for hair and makeup before referencing the sunken place from Jordan Peele’s hit film Get Out.

“’HM’ stands for ‘hair and makeup,’ Mike,” she responded. “The two women beside me in this pic did my hair (H) and makeup (M) for a shoot. The blouse I’m wearing is by @norisolferrari and I doubt you can buy it at the retail chain you’re thinking of. (I got it from the designer via a stylist.) And here I was thinking you were an intellectual, and not just the guy who hangs out in the sunken place talking guns with the NRA’s ‘official black guy’ who literally changed his last name to ‘black.’”

Mike apologized and admitted his mistake, but the damage was already done. Twitter has been filled with users mocking his failed attempt at calling out Reid.

Check out a sample of the reactions below.

DXclusives: Black Panther 2, Sean Paul Lil Xan

4 Hip Hop Recommendations For Marvel’s “Black Panther 2”

HipHopDX writer Dana Scott offered up four suggestions for the second installment of the Black Panther franchise, which has been a dominant force since premiering in theaters in February. The original film was recently named the top-grossing superhero movie of all time.

A MF DOOM and Kendrick Lamar collaboration along with a cameo by Run The Jewels are few proposals that Scott has for the sequel.

From Rihanna To Busta Rhymes: Sean Paul Has Stories For Days

Sean Paul has a lot of cool stories from his years in the music industry and among them include a time he got a chance to hang out with Rihanna.

“I really liked doing the song with Rihanna ’cause she came to Jamaica,” he told DX’s Kyle Eustice. “Most people who I’ve worked with, like I go over there or I do it via the internet. But this time, we got the chance to show her how Jamaicans flex. She came to the club, she came to the beach, she came to the studio, we showed her the good places to eat. So it was kinda cool for her to see what my world’s about.”

Lil Xan’s “The Man” Video Is A Bullshit Take On Mental Illness Group Therapy

HipHopDX’s Editor-in-Chief Trent Clark ripped into Lil Xan’s latest visual for “The Man” off his recently released album TOTAL XANARCHY. The fact that Stat Quo is his manager isn’t enough to save him from the ink-lashing Clark imposed upon him. DX’s EIC considers the visual to be an inconsiderate and hypocritical take on the nation’s bubbling opioid crisis.

“Making a mockery of one of society’s most delicate subjects — one that’s still not totally understood across the board — is unacceptable,” Clark pens. “Lil Xan, Sam King, Noreberto Garcia, Jordan Page, Lerry Kin, YCFILMS and production company Buffnerds Media should all be ashamed.”
