Chance The Rapper Calls Out Heineken Commercial As "Terribly Racist"

Chance The Rapper has taken aim at Heineken over a new commercial that he has labeled “terribly racist.”

The advertisement — intended to promote the brewing company’s range of light beers — features a bartender spotting a woman at a rooftop party. He subsequently opens up a bottle of Heineken Light and slides it down the bar, past two black women and a black man, before landing it in the hands of the woman he first spotted. It then pops up with the tagline, “Sometimes, lighter is better.”

After seeing the advertisement, Chance turned to Twitter on Sunday (March 25) to share his view that companies are purposely making commercials with racial undertones to drive traffic and help gain more views.

It comes just a few months after HM came under fire for putting an African American child in a hoodie with the words “COOLEST MONKEY IN THE JUNGLE” on the front. The Weeknd and G-Eazy subsequently cut ties with the Swedish retail giant, which later apologized and removed the hoodie from their stores and website.

50 Cent Says Trey Songz’ Domestic Violence Accuser Is Just Out For "The Bag"

Not one to shy away from offering his two cents on the latest in pop culture news, rapper 50 Cent recently provided his take on domestic abuse allegations made against Trey Songz.

50 Cent addressed the matter in two separate posts uploaded to Instagram on Sunday (March 25).

In his first post, 50 suggested that Trey Songz’s accuser, Andrea Buera, is merely out for a check.

“This stripper joint Andrea got Lisa bloom talking bout Trey hit her, everybody know he ain’t hit her this a money play smh anything to get the Bag. #thesehoescrazy,” 50 Cent wrote, adding a collage photo of Buera and a money bag emoji.

Buera alleges that Songz physically assaulted her at an NBA All-Star Weekend party.

“I was attending an after party when Trey began yelling at me, choking me, punching me, and ultimately he knocked me to the ground,” Buera said during a press conference earlier this month. “While I was on the ground, he continued punching me and he did not stop until his security guard pulled him off of me. I tried defending myself by hitting his hand off of my neck, but when I got out of the choke hold, he then started punching me in the face.”

Songz, who has denied the allegations, turned himself into authorities on March 19. He was released on $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on April 9.

Donald Glover’s "Deadpool" Animated Series Shelved

Donald Glover won’t be bringing an animated version of Marvel’s popular Deadpool character to television. According to Variety, Glover, FX and Marvel have decided to part ways on a planned Deadpool series, which was announced for FX’s sister channel FXX in May 2017.

“Due to creative differences, FX, Donald Glover, Stephen Glover and Marvel Television have agreed to part ways on Marvel’s ‘Deadpool’ animated series, FX will no longer be involved with the project,” FX said in a statement. “FX and Marvel have an ongoing relationship through our partnership on ‘Legion,’ which will continue.”

Deadpool transformed from a comic book favorite to a mainstream star thanks to an eponymous film starring Ryan Reynolds, which was released in 2016. A sequel is scheduled to hit theaters on May 18.

Glover is still on good terms with FX despite the decision to not proceed with his animated series. He’s the creator of the network’s hit show Atlanta, which is currently in the middle of its second season.

David Banner Reveals How He Recouped Over $100K Spent Making “The God Box”

It’s been almost a year since David Banner released The God Box and speaking with HipHopDX’s Kyle Eustice, Banner shares how he was able to make back what he spent creating the project. It wasn’t the album that generated the $100,000 spent to create it, but the actual “God Boxes” he sold on his website.

Each box was comprised of a flag, a t-shirt, Hidden Colors 3, Black Friday, autographed copies of The God Box (including, the chopped and screwed version), as well as stickers, pins and a copy of Anthony Browder’s The Browder Files.

“I spent over $100,000 to produce this album,” Banner told DX. “So, I had to take a break before I really concentrated on shooting videos and make some money back because I’m still a businessman. I’m not a fool. If the people aren’t going to move towards the movement, then I have to allow it to make money first. So, on DavidBanner.com, I created The God Boxes … And to be honest with you, The God Boxes initially sold more than the album did. I sold so many God Boxes that it literally paid for what I spent to record the album.”

#DXHitList: The Taz Taylor Session

Taz Taylor is one of the next breakout producers, and he’s coming into the game with a plan of his own in the form of Internet Money. Speaking with DX, the Florida producer curated a special #DXHitList playlist on Spotify for us and talked about the difference between industry producers and ones like himself getting placements with the likes of Gucci Mane, Kodak Black, Trippie Redd and Lil Skies.

“Producers kinda envy us out here,” he says. “These industry producers that I’ve met will spend 14 days to a month working on 10 beats to work on these sessions. We show up with 341 beats. They get jealous of us because they can’t compete. These artists go into other sessions buzzing about that shit.”

Statik Selektah Says Labeling New Music As “Old School” Is Bad For Hip Hop

DX caught up with Statik Selektah recently to discuss one of his tweets saying how lamenting how certain types of Hip Hop are labeled as “old school.” In his mind, this is a bad development.

“It’s bad for Hip Hop when people try to label anything with soul or a raw element to it as ‘90s or old school,” he tells DX. “It creates a separation. It makes the young kids look at sampling music as dated.”
