Chuck D On Seeing Public Enemy Posters In "Black Panther" & His Message to JAY-Z & Diddy

Tokyo, Japan – Long before Black Panther became a box office behemoth, Chuck D was a fan of the revolutionary comic book. So, when Marvel Studio wanted to use two Public Enemy posters in the movie, the legendary frontman was all about it.

At the beginning of the film, director and Oakland native Ryan Coolger takes viewers to the blacktop of his hometown circa 1992 — also the breeding ground of the Black Panther Party.

While in N’Jobu’s apartment (played by Sterling K. Brown), a Public Enemy Fear Of A Black Planet poster can be seen hanging on the wall.

Later in the movie, another Public Enemy poster pops up, only this time it’s for the Long Island group’s seminal album, 1988’s It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back.

“The photographer who shot Yo! Bum Rush The Show and It Takes A Nation Of Millions is Glen E. Friedman,” Chuck explains to HipHopDX. “Glen shot Ice-T, Rob Base, Run-DMC and then Glen shot us. We shot the jail shot at a precinct in midtown Manhattan not too far from Madison Square Garden. We got in there and shot it.”

“Glen was the one who probably had to approve it and then we all had to,” he continues. “I was a big Black Panther fan — not only as Black Panthers but the comic book created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in ’68. It was a no brainer. Marvel doesn’t make any mistakes. It was a phenomenon to know the Black Panther movie was coming before everyone knew it was a phenomenon because I grew up with it.”

Once Chuck actually saw the film, it was another story.

“To see it in the movie twice, it was prideful, yes,” he admits. “It felt good. I knew it was going to happen but to see it happen was definitely prideful. A lot of people didn’t see the first one. That photo shoot was in Birmingham, U.K. our second year and that’s right before It Takes A Nation came out.”

Even with all of Public Enemy’s accolades, Chuck knows there’s still work that needs to be done. He notes seeing JAY-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs having a battle on Twitter about who’s going to be #1 on Forbes’ 2018 List Of Hip Hop’s Wealthiest Artists. He believes that does nothing for Hip Hop as a whole.

“As a structured organized, I wish the money was distributed to more people better,” he says. “To see JAY-Z and Puffy have a playful argument about who’s going to be the top of Forbes, I look at my peer group and they’re just trying to get by. Look at a guy like Masta Ace who’s just trying to continue his art and feed his family, I just wish the distribution is a little less painful.

“It could be a lot more fair across the board. It’s the lack of administration. I was talking to [DJ] Premier, I said, ‘I do so much of this and it’s not based on money.’ Yeah, I go out with Prophets Of Rage and our job is do our thing but everything else I do is painfully for free. JAY-Z and Puffy arguing about who has most money — something’s wrong with that. How many jobs have you created? Who are you paying and what are you doing for it? It all came out from the sacrifices we made for you.”

"Atlanta" Actor Says Donald Glover Went All In For "Teddy Perkins" Role

Those watching Atlanta on Friday night (April 6) might have noticed the character the episode revolved around — Teddy Perkins — looked like Michael Jackson had risen from the dead. Not only that, Perkins carried the same mannerisms as Donald Glover, raising suspicions it was actually the show’s co-creator donned in whiteface.

Lo and behold, Perkins was played by Glover who dipped himself in white makeup for the role.

The #teddyperkins episode was just wow. #DonaldGlover and everyone involved are brilliant #Atlanta #AtlantaFX

Fellow Atlanta actor Derrick Haywood confirmed the news to Vulture, explaining, “Initially, I had no idea that Teddy Perkins was actually played by Donald Glover. Not only did Glover play Teddy, he transformed into Teddy on set, staying in character as the shady figure – pasty makeup, wig, high-pitched voice and all – between scenes.”

“The director [Hiro Murai] called ‘Teddy’ over [on set] and said, ‘Let’s see what Teddy thinks,’” he continues. “I’m like, ‘Okay, who is this Teddy guy and why is his opinion so important?’ When I say this guy was in character the whole time, it was just amazing the commitment he brought. We were calling him Teddy, he acted as Teddy – there was no Donald on set whatsoever.”

Santana turned himself in to Port Authority police on March 12 after TSA discovered a gun in his luggage at the Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. He was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, carrying a weapon on an aircraft, unlawful possession of a weapon and drug possession.

Essex County prosecutors let the federal authorities take over the case after Santana pleaded not guilty to the state charges, which were dismissed last week. A plea in the federal proceedings has yet to be made.

Juelz Santana is going to be prosecuted by federal authorities, according to Associated Press. The veteran MC is facing drug and gun charges after fleeing from an airport when TSA found a .38-caliber handgun and oxycodone pills, which he didn’t have a prescription for, in his carry-on bag.

Essex County prosecutors have decided to defer to the feds in the case. Santana, who remains behind bars, pleaded not guilty to the state charges, which were dismissed last week. A plea in the federal proceedings hasn’t been made yet.

Santana faces an uphill battle against the feds, who have a high conviction rate. In 2012, 93 percent of defendants in federal cases pleaded guilty or were found guilty.

More pieces to the puzzle have emerged in Juelz Santana’s recent airport incident. According to TMZ, the Dipset rapper fled Newark Liberty International Airport on Friday (March 9) for not only possessing a gun but also the powerful narcotic Oxycodone.

Law enforcement reportedly said Santana had eight Oxycodone pills in his baggage at the time of his arrest. Consequently, Santana, who turned himself in on Monday (March 12), has been formally charged with felony drug possession.

He’s scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday (March 14).

Juelz Santana surrendered to Port Authority police on Monday (March 12) after fleeing Newark Liberty International Airport when TSA discovered a gun in his luggage, according to NJ.com. Santana has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, carrying a weapon on an aircraft, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of drugs.

A police spokesman said the Dipset member, whose real name is LaRon James, went peacefully into police custody around 1 a.m. Eastern on Monday. Santana is scheduled to appear in a U.S. District Court in Newark, New Jersey on Monday afternoon.

(The previous version of this article was published on March 11, 2018 and can be found below.)

Juelz Santana reportedly plans to turn himself over to police custody, according to the South Passaic Daily Voice. On Friday (March 9), Santana fled from Newark Liberty International Airport after TSA detected a gun in his bag.

The Daily Voice reports arrangements were made for Santana to surrender to police at 9 a.m. Eastern on Sunday (March 11). As of 3:09 p.m. EST, Santana — whose real name is LaRon James — hasn’t been booked according to Passaic County Jail records.

Santana was arrested multiple times in 2011. In 2013, he was sentenced to two years probation for threatening his neighbor.

(The original version of this article was published on March 9, 2018 and can be found below.)

Juelz Santana evidently didn’t make his flight on Friday night (March 9). According to NBC New York, the Dipset rapper fled the Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey after TSA found a gun in his baggage.

Sources said that as soon as Santana was detected by authorities, he ran off and possibly jumped in a cab. Port Authority Police Department detectives are reportedly looking for the Love and Hip Hop: New York star at this time.

TSA regulations state that bringing a weapon to an airport security checkpoint is punishable by a fine and could result in an arrest. If the gun is loaded, fines can reach up to $9,800.

Drake Drops “Nice For What" Video Featuring Tiffany Haddish, Issa Rae & Yara Shahidi

After Drake gave anxious fans a 24-hour notice that he will be dropping new music Friday (April 6), a New Orleans bounce-inspired track sampling Lauryn Hill’s 1998 single “Ex-Factor” arrived in the form of a visual.

Diverging from his traditional female-banter of lamenting about his many relationships with women, he instead hypes up womanhood with lyrics like “You really pipin’ up on these niggas / You gotta be nice for what to these niggas?”

Tiffany Haddish, Issa Rae, Yara Shahidi, Jourdan Dunn and the Lejonhjärta twins all make an appearance along with many other women in the entertainment industry.

It’s not entirely clear if “Nice For What” will make an appearance on the 6 God’s upcoming album, but it is enough to get fans excited for what’s to come.

“Nice For What” comes after Drizzy’s surprise release of Scary Hours EP featuring “Diplomatic Immunity” and the Billboard-topping “God’s Plan.”
