Chali 2na Says Jurassic 5 Knows "It’s Time" For New Album

Fort Collins, CO – It’s been 12 years since Jurassic 5 released Feedback, the group’s fourth studio album and follow-up to the platinum-selling Power In Numbers. While backstage at The Aggie Theatre in Fort Collins, Colorado earlier this month, Chali 2na — the baritone voice of the California Hip Hop collective —  revealed they’ve been talking about doing another J5 album in the near future.

Considering the group broke up in 2007 and got back together in 2013, it would be a monumental event for fans of the veteran group.

“We’ve all been talking about it,” Chali tells HipHopDX. “We’ve been in the room, on the phone, emails, and a few of us have been experimenting with little different things in the studio, talking about beats. To me, that’s us stirring the pot trying to cook something up. I’m just hoping that it spills into fruition. But we know it’s time.”

Although J5 turntablist Cut Chemist is currently touring in support of his new solo album Die Cut, he’s also focused on the future.

“After the adventures of Die Cut, I have a hankering for some original recipe rap beats,” he says. “I’ve started making some and presented them to the MCs.”

For years, it was doubtful a reunion was even in the cards. But the high demand for their return was palpable and proved to be surprising — especially to them.

“You decide to agree to disagree because of the bigger picture,” Chali says. “That’s kinda what we did. Plus, we had cool ass offers that we never had before. We never had these type of offers before. We were like, ‘We put out a record damn near seven, eight, nine years ago? And people are offering us this?’”

“All of us were surprised — extremely surprised,” he continues. “We were like, ‘Okay, this is a chance for all of us — whether we’re doing cool financially or not — to pick ourselves up, figure out if we should continue more, fund our solo careers — whatever we needed to do. We can use what we built to do that.’ We decided, ‘Alright.’ From 2013 ’til last year, I think was just us mashing again, feeling good, but still from a grown-ups’ perspective. We were kids when we started.”

For now, J5 isn’t on the road but that could change anytime. After all, that’s where Chali feels most at home.

“I stay on the road just because this is the one thing I really know how to do more than anything else,” he says. “I thank God that it’s been my job for the majority of my working life.”

Video Surfaces Of Fabolous Telling Emily B’s Dad: "I Have A Bullet With Your Name On It!"

Englewood, NJ – A video of Fabolous threatening his longtime girlfriend Emily B and her father has surfaced. TMZ released footage of the harrowing incident, which is said to have been recorded on Wednesday (March 28) at their Englewood, New Jersey home.

Video recorded from inside the home shows an angry Fabolous charging at Emily B and her father. Although his security did nothing to de-escalate the situation, they did hold back Fab and Em’s dad.

At one point, you can hear Fab ask Emily why she had him in his house, to which her father replied, “That’s my mutherfukin’ daughter, you fucking coward!”

According to the police report, Emily called her dad to the home so he could remove guns from the residence in fear Fab would use them. The video also shows Fabolous, 40, loudly arguing with Emily B’s father while claiming he has “a bullet” with his John Hancock carved in the casing. Even more heartbreaking, children can be heard screaming in the background.

Earlier this month, he reportedly knocked out two of Emily’s front teeth in a rage and the March 28 altercation is just a continuation of what happened. Fab turned himself in to authorities the same evening after the former Love Hip Hop cast member called police saying she had been assaulted.

He avoided jail time regarding the incident but was subsequently cited for the alleged assault and issued a ticket for a future court appearance

Fabolous and Emily B have been together for over 10 years. They share two children together.

Close Friends Remember Anticon Records Co-Founder Alias

Co-founder of Anticon Records, Brandon “Alias” Whitney, passed away on Friday (March 30). He was 41. Sage Francis, longtime friend and collaborator, took to Twitter to break the news on Saturday (March 31).

“There’s no proper way to say this or deal with this, but so I want to put this out there and then step away for a while,” the Strange Famous Records boss wrote. “Our great friend and longtime collaborator Brendon Whitney (@AliasAnticon) passed away of a heart attack yesterday. No one was nicer. No one. We love you, Bren.”

A tweet from Anticon backed up Sage’s annoucement: “Just received news of a major loss – the passing of our dear friend and Anticon co-founder @AliasAnticon. We will always remember him for his incredible heart and talent, and the support he gave us all. Rest in peace Brendon Whitney.”

The Maine producer (and sometimes rapper) established Anticon in 1998 along with fellow co-founders Tim “Sole” Holland, Doseone, Jel, Odd Nosdam, Pedestrian, and Yoni Wolf of WHY?.

Sole told HipHopDX, “Alias is truly one of the greatest producers of all time. I can’t believe he is gone.”

Ceschi Ramos, co-founder of Fake Four Inc., also spoke on Alias’ undeniable impact on the indie Hip Hop world.

“When I first met the Anticon collective, I was in my late teens,” Ramos tells HipHopDX. “These guys were living in a warehouse in East Oakland, just constantly working on music, running a label and living together. It made me want to drop my college scholarship and just do what they did.

“I originally found out about these artists from a compilation they released when I was in my final year of high school. I heard Alias’ ‘Divine Disappointment’ and the concept moved me. Then, I discovered a bootleg of Deep Puddle Dynamics [formerly Live Poets] and it blew my mind open. I had never heard conceptual, philosophical Hip Hop pushed so far. Alias’ production on Sole’s Bottle Of Humans moved me.”

Ramos says that was nothing compared to meeting the man behind the moniker.

“He was as genuine and humble as they come,” he says. “Dose and Sole had these giant personas. As much as I loved them, they were slightly intimidating to be around — sarcastic as hell, and rockstars to me. Alias was just this super fucking cool guy who listened and didn’t judge, who made us feel worthy. This guy didn’t have a bad bone in his body. Anybody will tell you that.

“To me, he was a master producer who constantly pushed himself forward. When he felt like rapping, he had moments of ultimate connection such as the underground classic, ‘Watching Water.’ Even though I haven’t seen him in years, I will always respect him and consider him a legend, and an integral force in the history of progressive Hip Hop. It tears me up that I even have to say this right now. Sending love to his family.”

Wolf reacted to Alias’ passing on Twitter, writing, “I am beyond saddened by this news. Bren was a human of the highest quality. We love and miss him so much.”

Doseone echoed Wolf’s sentiments and tweeted, “Bren is the most beautiful man I have ever had the privledge of sharing air with. He is my mentor my idol and my brother. His love for me, meant I was lovable, because his purity as a person was never to be questioned. His talents only matched by his kindness,I love him forever.”

Several of his other close friends and peers also took to social media to express their condolences, including Slug of Atmosphere, El-P, Blueprint, Dumbfoundead and B. Dolan.

Check out their reactions below.
