Glendale, CA – The Beat Junkies celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Beat Junkie Institute Of Sound on Saturday (April 14) in Los Angeles.

Special guests included Jurassic 5’s DJ Nu-Mark, Visionaries, Dilated Peoples’ Rakaa Iriscience, Defari, Supernatural and Exile, among others.

Over the past year, Rhettmatic has embraced his new role as teacher but has really learned the most from watching his peers.

“Teaching is a whole other beast in itself,” Rhett tells HipHopDX. “For me personally, I’m really still learning how to teach because it’s not easy. I really gotta hand it to Choc and Babu to be able to teach our very own curriculum to our student body, and be able to explain it to them in such a way that they can pick it up easily and learn from it. Choc and Babs have really made a high bench mark in terms of teaching. I hope one day I can teach as good as them.”

“I’ve learned to give with no expectations of any sort of return,” Babu adds. “Sharing and teaching has been very rewarding or should I say enriching? Give us another year or two, and god willing I can then say it’s rewarding [laughs]. I see BJIOS continuing to grow and I see it becoming the benchmark for all DJ schools around the world.”

Nu-Mark, who is currently working on the TBS show Drop The Mic with host Method Man, found himself inspired after event.

“After watching all these amazing home grown talents perform, I realized as I was watching the Beat Junkies that they’ve built an amazing foundation/community for upcoming DJs,” he says to DX. “The next generation owes the Junkies proper respect.”

Fellow Beat Junkie Melo D, who was unable to attend the festivities, spoke on the future of the BJIOS.

“Aside from being able to demonstrate DJ techniques, there’s also an art form to being able to explain in words how to execute these techniques,” Melo D says. “We are so used to just doing certain moves and relying on muscle memory that we forget exactly what we are doing step by step. When we see that lightbulb go off in our students, when they get it and you can see the excitement in their face, that’s the most rewarding.

“So, in the future we are taking the school online. We would love to teach people globally around the world and will start offering online classes soon. Look out for BeatJunkies.TV coming soon, too.”

Rhett echoed his sentiments.

“To actually see the smiles on the faces of our students — both kids and adults — when they achieve something that they worked really hard on and it finally clicks is the best part,” he says. “To able to share our passion and knowledge with anybody who wants to learn about our culture, it’s very humbling when they say they truly appreciate us, our staff and our school.

“I don’t know what the future brings but I hope the BJIOS will be around for a long time and continue help cultivate the culture that we, the Beat Junkies, love so dearly.”

Belly Attacked By Security At Coachella 2018

Indio, CA – Belly was on the receiving end of a beatdown during the second weekend of the 2018 Coachella Festival. Despite being a performer at the festival, the Mumble Rap MC was punched repeatedly by a group of security guards during The Weeknd’s set.

Video of the incident surfaced online, showing multiple people throwing punches at Belly. Sources confirmed the altercation involved security, according to Billboard.

Wtf .. why they jump #belly at Coachella during #theweeknd set??

Belly was in good spirits about the situation, not letting the fight ruin his festival experience.

“No negative bullshit can steal my joy,” he tweeted on Saturday (April 21). “I performed the best show of my life, on 4/20 at Coachella ‼️I really came from nothing, and I’m still here.. it’s gotta mean something.”

Earlier on Saturday, Belly noted his attackers never managed to knock him to the ground.

“20 of you pussies couldn’t take me off my feet,” he wrote.

Coachella hasn’t issued a statement on the incident at this time.

KXNG Crooked Announces Slaughterhouse Departure

KXNG Crooked has cut ties with Slaughterhouse. The West Coast lyricist revealed he’s left the supergroup, which hasn’t released an album since 2012’s Welcome To Our House.

“I’m no longer a part of Slaughterhouse,” he said in a video uploaded on Instagram. “I’m no longer a part of that collective. It ain’t no beef. It’s all love. I wish them dudes nothing but success. I mean that. Ain’t no problems with Shady. I love Shady … What they do for me and what they continue to do for me, I’m very appreciative.”

Slaughterhouse fans are the best fans in Hip Hop I salute you! Thanks for the support! ?

A post shared by GOD BLESS THE KXNG (@kxngcrooked) on Apr 20, 2018 at 4:16pm PDT

Slaugterhouse’s inactivity as a group prompted Crooked to officially announced his departure. The veteran MC laughed when discussing the collective’s long-rumored Glass House album, saying he’d retweet it if it ever drops.

“I’ve been sober for two years,” he noted. “Let me tell you a secret. Sober Crook likes to rap. Group ain’t rapping no more and that’s fine. It was fun while it lasted. Glass House, I have no clue. All I can tell you [is] it exists. If it comes out, I’ll retweet it. Other than that, it’s all love. Everybody who supported me in Slaughterhouse, thank you.”

The future of Slaughterhouse has been bleak since Joe Budden stepped away from rap and carved out a new career as an online personality. Last year, the inability to release Glass House prompted some public disputes between the group members.

Lil Durk Credits JAY-Z, 50 Cent, Diddy, Etc. For His Entrepreneurial Motivation

Los Angeles, CA – Whether Lil Durk left or actually got dropped from Def Jam is irrelevant. The “Chicago rapper” isn’t putting all his eggs in one Easter basket.

During a recent interview with VLADTV, Durk, 25, spoke on his various business ventures, which included starting a trucking and realty company, named Asking About Trucking and AB Real Estate Management, respectively.

The OTF crew leader also attributed his off-rap hustle to actually listening to the financial musings of JAY-Z, Drake, 50 Cent and Diddy, a remarkable admission, seeing that his generation has been widely criticized with failing to obtain Hip Hop literacy from its elders.

“A lot of rappers come here talking that big boy stuff if rap would stop right now a lot of y’all would be broke,” Durk says of his peers. “Like what y’all gon do now? I got my own trucking company. My own real estate company.”

We started off with [two trucks] and now we got like eight or nine big wheelers,” he continued.

“They make real videos to show you. And I done watched a couple of those videos like, “Damn. I need my own real estate company. You get drivers. It can be anybody but you gotta have the right drivers. I don’t want no muthafucka who get high off any type of drugs, who drink all day to be on the road with my shit, you feel me? So we pick all smart muthafuckas, everybody who ready to work and think.”

When it comes to the real estate initiative, Durk admits he’s just getting his feet wet but revealed he did obtain his second house to flip already.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Durk speaks on his hometown of Chicago and speaks on moving to Atlanta in favor of a better lifestyle due to the city’s consistent crime rate.

Down below, he speaks on his the Def Jam situation in his own words.
