How Kanye West’s Enthusiasm For “The College Dropout” Changed Common’s Life

Boulder, CO – Common arrived in Boulder, Colorado last Tuesday (February 20) on a night when temperatures plummeted to negative 5 degrees. The MC/actor and outspoken activist was the featured speaker at a Cultural Events Board function hosted by The University of Colorado-Boulder.

After hundreds of freezing college students trickled into the Macky Auditorium and took their seats, Common warmed things up with a little freestyle action before going into his speech.

Tickets to see @Common on February 20 are on sale NOW at the @CU_UMC. Available from 10-3 this week until the sell out. #CUBoulder #GoBuffs #ForeverBuffs #BeBoulder #BoulderBound #skobuffs

Throughout the nearly 90-minute event, the Chicago-bred Hip Hop legend spoke on his definition of greatness.

“In the Common dictionary, greatness is when one reaches their highest potential,” he told the audience. “By doing so, you inspire others to reach their highest level.”

As he described the steps it took him to find greatness, Common referenced the story of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old black boy from Mississippi who was lynched in 1955 for whistling at a white woman. When Common was 12 years old, he worked as a ball boy for the Chicago Bulls and would have through the tunnels that ran under the court. One day, he had an experience that would change his life.

On Tuesday, February 20th, #Common was featured in “An Evening With Common.” The native Chicago rapper shared many funny and inspiring anecdotes to motivate and encourage any who attended his lecture.

“My job was to bring equipment after the game from the visiting team’s locker room to the home team’s locker room,” he explained. “You have to push these water containers and take different equipment under this dark tunnel. Well, me being a little scared kid, I used to run through the tunnel tryin’ get to the other locker room ’cause I always felt like something was down there.

“One day,  after eight times of me doing this each game, I decided that to get tough and be that black guy in the scary movie — like in Get Out — and see what’s going on. I just said, ‘I’mma fight. I’mma fight this one through.’ I remember a moment where, as I stopped, I felt like a spirit talking to me. I felt there was a spirit of Emmett Till telling me that I had something great to do on this planet. And that his life would not be in vein if I lived it up to what I was suppose to do on this planet.”

Fast forward to 2004 and Common had already discovered his musical path in life. As he was recording his sixth studio album, Be, fellow Chicagoan Kanye West was wrapping up his debut album, The College Dropout. He saw how West’s enthusiasm for his own work was infectious to those around him.

“Being around Kanye, being around people who believe in themselves — you know Kanye has no problem believing in himself [laughs] … we would have these things called listening sessions,” he said. “While we would do listening sessions, Kanye would play The College Dropout. He would hop up on the table and be rapping and spitting and just feelin’ it. And I would be like, ‘Man, his songs that I didn’t even like I started liking ’cause he believed it so much.”

This experienced changed Common’s approach to his own music. Pretty soon, he was using the same technique and witnessing results.

“When I started to do my listening sessions, I didn’t hop up on the table, but I started to declare what I really believed about my music,” he explained. “Instead of being shy and saying, ‘Aw man, I don’t wanna sound too cocky or too confident,’ I’d say, ‘Hey, y’all check this out. This song is classic right here. Check it out. This is a beautiful piece, y’all gotta check it out.’ Low and behold, I released the album Be and it was the first album I released that immediately got classy reviews. And I was like, ‘Wow this belief thing is really working.’

“I started to believe and declare that I’mma believe in myself. Even before you know it wholeheartedly — say it. Continue to say it. At certain points, your self-consciousness will believe it. Your superior will believe it. And it will just moving forward for you. I started saying the things I wanted. I was studying acting. I had been on my auditions and not really getting the roles, but I started just continuing to say, ‘I believe.’ And I got this audition, and I got my first call back and eventually got the first movie. The same first call back became the first movie I did, a movie called Smokin’ Aces. This believin’ thing was working. It was working.”

Kendrick Lamar Wants To Make Cameo In “Black Panther” Sequel

Kendrick Lamar hopes to be more involved in the next Black Panther movie. About 36 minutes into his appearance on BBC Radio 1, Kung Fu Kenny revealed his desire to appear in the hit film’s sequel as opposed to just curating its soundtrack.

“Come on, I got to now!” Lamar told Claro Amfo when asked if he’d make a cameo in the sequel.

Amfo then asked him what type of a character he’d like to play. K. Dot explained why he’d like to portray someone similar to Killmonger, who was played by Michael B. Jordan in the film.

“I really enjoy Killmonger’s character, just off the simple fact, you know, he was a villain but he came with some real [talk],” he noted. “He was a villain, but he was loved and misunderstood. So if I could, I’d play a Killmonger for sure.”

Black Panther has been a juggernaut at the box office, attaining one of the five best domestic opening weekends of all time. Marvel’s smash hit broke the $200 million mark domestically in its opening weekend, putting it in the same territory as the latest Star Wars movies and Jurassic World.

The Lamar-curated soundtrack has been a huge success too, debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 while receiving acclaim from fans and critics alike. In our review, HipHopDX gave it a 4.5 out of 5.

Hip Hop Week In Review: Tekashi 6ix9ine, Blac Chyna & Birdman

HipHopDX – This week in Hip Hop, Tekashi 6ix9ine released his debut project DAY69 on Friday (February 23) and got into a brawl at the LAX Airport ahead of its release. Blac Chyna got caught up in some controversy of her own when a video surfaced of her performing a sexual act on unidentified man. Plus, Birdman’s business practices were put on blast by Rap-A-Lot founder J. Prince, who gave the Cash Money boss a stiff warning.

Tekashi 6ix9ine Gets Jumped Releases An Album

Tekashi 6ix9ine’s entire career has been surrounded in controversy, from sex crime allegations to having fights break out wherever he goes. Tekashi’s latest brawl occurred at the LAX Airport just a few days before his DAY69 album dropped. The altercation was caused by some Texas rappers who just so happened to catch the “Gummo” rapper outside his terminal.

A day later, three men were arrested at the San Antonio International Airport for threatening the polarizing rapper on Facebook. Tekashi drew the ire of Tango Orejon, the most violent gang in Texas, ahead of a show in San Antonio.

Blac Chyna’s Sex Tape

A video of Blac Chyna performing fellatio on a man who was later revealed to be her ex Mechie made its rounds on social media this week, and Twitter was not impressed. Celebrity sex tapes aren’t as shocking as they were 10 years ago, so if it’s less than great, the internet is relentless in their commentary and will not have mercy, as Chyna learned this week.

Her attorney, Lisa Bloom, came to Chyna’s defense after the clip was released. “Revenge porn — posting explicit images without the consent of everyone in those images — is a crime, a civil wrong, and a form of domestic abuse,” Bloom tweeted.

J. Prince Warns Birdman Over Bad Business Practices

Rap-A-Lot boss J. Prince called out Birdman over his business practices this week in a lengthy Instagram post. In the post, he mentions his son Jas Prince as the person who discovered Drake and kindly reminds the Cash Money boss that he should be paid accordingly.

“I’ve never been a man to use the word ‘Family’ loosely because I believe life and death is in the power of the tongue,” Prince wrote. “I also walk in great respect for the universal laws, one being cause and effect, simply meaning you reap what you sow. With that being said, I say to this man they call “@Birdman5star” don’t forget you have children and I know you wouldn’t want them to reap the seeds you have sewn by doing bad business.”

It also appears Birdman is now engaged to RB singer Toni Braxton with plans of marriage in the near future. He recently discussed his relationship with Braxton and her family on The Wendy Williams Show.

Murs Explains How His Love Of Gang Culture Star Wars “Destroyed” His Career

In an exclusive interview with HipHopDX, Murs goes into detail about how his love for gang-related and nerdy things worked against him.

“I think it destroyed my career in terms of sales,” he said with a laugh. “No one could relate to that. I didn’t own an album by a white person. Only album I owned by a white person was Vanilla Ice up to 2003. I never heard The Beatles, Sublime, Rolling Stones. I discovered all that via Slug of Atmosphere and making white friends, which I didn’t have.”

The DX Breakdown host’s upcoming album A Strange Journey Into The Unimaginable is slated for release next month.

.idk Describes How Losing His Mother Influenced “IWASVERYBAD”

It’s never easy losing someone close to you, especially if it’s the woman who gave birth to you. For Maryland rapper .idk, he channeled the energy from losing his mother into making his IWASVERYBAD project instead of turning to drugs.

“I think everyone should kinda stay away from those things, but it’s hard to say that because some people don’t know how to cope with life like everyone else,” he says. “Some people have to really, really find other ways to escape, you know? Luckily, I have music, but not everyone has music.”

Drake Chews Out Peter Rosenberg For Criticizing “God’s Plan” Video

New York, NY – As Drake’s “God’s Plan” single spends it fourth week at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100, apparently everything isn’t all roses for the Toronto superstar.

Following the release of the “God’s Plan” video last week, Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg questioned Drake’s intention behind the visual, which saw the 6 God give away almost $1 million to the people of Miami.

“Is it a little bit cheap to use those emotions of, ‘Look at this person in need getting something good,’ and transfer those emotions onto yourself?” Rosenberg said. “I don’t know the last time I saw a four-minute montage of ‘Look at all the nice things I do.’”

Once Drake’s mother told him about Rosenberg’s comments, he felt inclined to call the longtime radio personality and give him a piece of his mind.

“I’ve never heard his Canadian accent that strongly,” Rosenberg explained on Thursday’s (February 22) episode of Ebro In The Morning. “Drake yelled and he was very passionate.”

As Rosenberg described, Drake screamed, “What’s your problem with me? How did you make this a negative thing?”

He added, “I could hear in his voice that this was very clearly the most important thing that he’s ever done. He was clearly very effected by doing something so good for people. That’s ultimately very great for the culture. But, I still would have said the video is not for me.”

After the release of the “God’s Plan” visual on February 16, Drake called it the “most important thing” he’s ever done in his career.

The most important thing I have ever done in my career…drop a ?? if I can share it with you.
