Snoop Dogg Won’t Insult Donald Trump Any More

Less than a year ago, Snoop Dogg was one of Hip Hop’s most prominent critics of President Donald Trump. But in a new interview for TV One’s Uncensored, Tha Doggfather explained why he’s stopped antagonizing the commander-in-chief.

“You don’t answer to politics with negativity and the same energy that they have, because you’ll never win,” he said. “This is the system that they designed. You can only beat the system by being the anti, and the anti-hate is love, so that’s what we do. Because I hated on the president. I came at him way foul at the beginning.”

Snoop detailed why he went so hard on Trump before realizing he was playing the president’s game. To truly combat Trump, the D-O Double G decided to change course and focus on putting out positive energy.

“I felt the way y’all feel,” he noted. “Because this president, whatever color you are, is very disrespectful to you as a human being. We took a few stands on him. Put a few pieces up, videos and threw a few shots at him. But I felt, that’s going nowhere fast ’cause he loves that.”

The veteran MC continued, “He’s one of those guys who he tweeted me for something I did and said my career fell off and then made my career blow up even bigger. I said, ‘This is a dummy. This is a straight dummy.’ Let me leave him alone, cuz, and put some peace in the world and put some love in the world and not focus on him. ‘Cause the devil’s a lie. Just put some peace in the world, and you should unite people of all walks of life and be the anti of what he is.”

Last year, Snoop made headlines for his “Lavender” video with BADBADNOTGOOD, which depicted a mock assassination of Trump. He continued to troll Trump throughout 2017, depicting the president’s corpse in artwork inspired by Ice Cube’s Death Certificate cover and releasing an EP titled Make America Crip Again.

Is Kill Edward Just J. Cole Featuring Himself On "KOD"?

J.Cole isn’t known for having guests on his albums. In fact, when 2014 Forest Hills Drive went platinum in 2015, he became the first Hip Hop artist to achieve the certification in more than 25 years without features. For this reason, die-hard fans and rap nerds alike were thrown for a loop when the artwork and tracklisting for his upcoming KOD album had not one but two features from a mysterious artist named Kill Edward.

So who is Kill Edward? A quick Google search reveals a whole lot of nothing except a song posted this week by a verified SoundCloud account (and on major streaming platforms) titled “tidal wave (Just a little reference).”

A pitched-up version of the track further points to Kill Edward being Cole himself, perhaps as an alter ego.

There’s also a Twitter account that matches the name of Kill Edward’s “Kill his ways” label, but it doesn’t really offer any clear clues about Edward’s identity. In its handful of tweets since January, the account has praised Michael Jackson and Lil Wayne, and only follows Minister Louis Farrakhan. Cole also follows Farrakhan from his verified account.

Is it possible that Kill Edward isn’t Cole, the same way Your Old Droog isn’t Nas?

We’ll have to wait until Friday to know for sure.

Smoke DZA On Why He Stays Independent & What To Expect On “Not For Sale” LP

It’s been a little over a year since Smoke DZA dropped his last album, Don’t Smoke Rock, a collaborative LP with iconic producer Pete Rock. After putting out three singles and his Ringside 6 EP, the Harlem MC is finally ready to roll out his sixth studio album, Not For Sale, on April 20.

“It’s a personal project to me,” DZA tells HipHopDX. “It’s a new bookmark in the chapter of Smoke … It’s new experiences, a new vibe and a new Smoke DZA. It’s a new sound, but it still stays true to what I believe in.”

Unlike Don’t Smoke Rock, Not For Sale makes use of multiple producers. However, this does little to break the cohesive nature of his vision.

“I like working with producers period … I handpicked the producers I wanted to work with,” DZA explains. “Sonically everybody’s on the same page. I get meticulous with the beats and the producers I work with to get the certain sound that I’m looking for.”

The title of the album is a reference to Smoke’s unwillingness to compromise his music or his brand to fit any corporate agenda.

“Artistic integrity is important, especially in these times,” he says. “I mean that’s something I hold dear to me. I’ve had many situations where I could have compromised my brain and my integrity to get a bag, allowing others to score off the vision I have for myself. This is way too important to me … I didn’t want to put my brand in danger.”

Although DZA has been able to maintain a career outside of the major label system, he does acknowledge they still play an essential role for some artists.

“I would be selfish to say they don’t matter because they do matter to someone else that may not have any money to put this shit out,” he concedes. “But, once you stake your claim and you’re consistent with your message, labels don’t matter if you have those intangibles going.”

The Harlem MC has grown a lot since his debut album was released in 2011. DZA, now in his 30s, reflected on where he was seven years ago.

“I’ve got kids running up to me saying that they listened to Rolling Stoned in high school,” he tells DX. “I’m a grown-ass man … when Rolling Stoned came out, I was still a kid. I was a brand new father. I was still learning shit.”

DZA is quick to note his children are aware of his musical persona. But at home, he’s just dad.

“They don’t see that at home … I’m not rapping a fairy tale life,” he says. “I based my whole career or life experiences that I encountered and been through.”

It’s because of this transparency and honesty in his music, he explains, that he isn’t uncomfortable with them discovering his nuances.

“If I hide it from them, they’ll go to a friends house and see it,” he adds with a laugh.

DZA’s Not For Sale drops this Friday (April 20) via Babygrande Records.
