Denzel Curry has an affinity for Muay Thai, and he’s given fans a peek at some of his training regimen as he got kicks in with a sparring partner.
The Florida native took to his Instagram on Thursday (December 21) with a clip that sees him sparring with his training partner inside a gym whilst others work out. Denzel lets off a series of kicks and punches after which his partner does the same.
Other footage shows pictures of Curry posing with other Muay Thai students and him in mid-action in another sparring session. He also showed a photo of himself packing on the muscle from all the training he’s been doing.
“Flowing but not the way you think,” Denzel Curry captioned his post.
The 27-year-old has been an avid fan of the combat sport. During an interview with Pitchfork in March, Curry explained how Muay Thai helped him focus more while recording his album Melt My Eyez See Your Future.
“The main thing is that when you’re sparring with someone, you’re there to train techniques,” Curry said. “You’re already working on your own thing, and he’s already working on his own thing. It comes down to eliminating ego. If you make a mistake or a bad choice, you get messed up.
“It reinforced certain things that I needed to learn: Focus on yourself, don’t let your ego get the best of you, listen, and be ready to strike when the iron’s hot. I was so worried about what all these other rappers are doing, instead of focusing on what I needed to be doing for this project.”
He’s mentioned speaking to the multi-hyphenate Thundercat about Muay Thai regularly as the producer is also a practitioner of combat sports. During an interview with the Red Bulletin earlier this year, Thundercat revealed how combat sports helped him get through a difficult period in his life.

“I’ve never been a person to participate in physical activities,” Thundercat said about picking up boxing and kickboxing. “This is maybe the first time that I’ve ever been this serious about something other than illustration and playing bass.”
Wiz Khalifa is also a fan of combat sports as he’s posted videos of himself in training. He joined forces with Kevin Hart last year to own a piece of the mixed martial arts company Professional Fighters League.
The partnership allows Wiz to work with the league on integrating music, assisting in content creation and coming up with an MMA-inspired lifestyle apparel line. Fans will also get to hear a selection of Wiz’s music in events throughout the upcoming season.
“I’m so proud to join forces with the Professional Fighters League,” Wiz said in a statement. “I’ve been doing MMA training for years now, and am also the biggest MMA fan — to be able to bring my expertise and vision to the sport is super exciting.”
