Gangsta Boo, Pioneering Memphis Rapper, Has Died Aged 43

Gangsta Boo, the pioneering Memphis rapper and former member of Three 6 Mafia, has died at the age of 43, HipHopDX has confirmed.

According to Fox 13 Memphis, the rapper (real name Lola Mitchell) was found dead around 4:00 p.m. local time on Sunday afternoon (January 1) in her hometown of Memphis. A cause of death has not yet been revealed.

As news of the Queen of Memphis’ death began spreading via social media, DJ Paul posted a photo of his former Three 6 Mafia group mate on social media, which many took as confirmation of her death.

HipHopDX has been told that a statement from Gangsta Boo’s family is on the way.

Gangsta Boo joined Three 6 Mafia in 1994 at the tender age of 15 and features on the legendary Memphis group’s first five albums: Mystic Stylez (1995), Chapter. 1: The End (1996), Chapter 2: World Domination (1997), When The Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1 (2000), and Choices: The Album (2001).

Following the release of her debut solo album Enquiring Minds in 1998 via Hypnotize Minds/Relativity Records, she became a household name across the South and beyond, thanks to her hit single “Where Dem Dollas At!?” She released her second album, Both Worlds *69, in 2001.

Boo also appeared on a series of other Three 6 Mafia-related projects, such as Tear Da Club Up Thugs’ 1999 album CrazyNDaLazDayz, Prophet Posse’s debut 1998 album Body Parts, Hypnotize Camp Posse’s 2000 album Three 6 Mafia Presents: Hypnotize Camp Posse, and Da Mafia 6ix’s 2013 mixtape 6ix Commandments. She also features on the Triple Six Mafia compilation albums Underground Vol.2: Club Memphis and Underground Vol.3: Kings of Memphis.

After leaving Three 6 Mafia over alleged financial disputes in 2002, Gangsta Boo dropped her third and final solo studio album, Enquiring Minds II: The Soap Opera, in 2004 via Yorktown Records. It features production from Drumma Boy, who at the time was a young and hungry up and coming producer looking to make a name for himself.

From there, she put out a string of mixtapes including 2006’s Still Gangsta with DJ Smallz, 2009’s The Rumors with DJ Drama, and 2015’s Candy, Diamonds Pills. She also teamed up with friend and fellow Three 6 Mafia affiliate La Chat in 2104 to drop their joint album Witch.

Her recent output saw the “Yeah Hoe” rapper feature on a number of high-profile collaborations, including Run The Jewels tracks “Love Again (Akinyele Back)” and “Walking in the Snow,” and Latto‘s “F.T.C.U.” alongside Memphis newcomer GloRilla.

In addition to DJ Paul, other tributes from Three 6 Mafia members included co-founder Juicy J who posted a photo of himself alongside Gangsta Boo with a lone broken heart emoji in the caption.

Juicy’s older brother and Triple Six affiliate Project Pat posted the cover for Boo’s second album Both Worlds *69, writing: “The Hardest to ever do it R. I. P. @missyeahoe will be missed.”

Crunchy Black shared a clip of a studio session with Boo, writing: “Gangster BOO WE LOVE YOU #BIG MEMPHIS.”

Uncle Murda Goes In On Kanye West, Gunna, Megan Thee Stallion & More On ‘Rap Up 2022’

Uncle Murda has returned with his latest “Rap Up” song, this time chewing over the antics of Kanye West, Gunna, Megan Thee Stallion and many more in unfiltered fashion.

The Brooklyn rapper continued his annual trend of recapping the biggest moments in Hip Hop culture of the past year on Saturday (December 31) with the release of “Rap Up 2022.”

The 15-minute track finds him dedicating ample bars to Kanye West, who he crowned “Donkey of the Year” for his various controversies, including his antisemitic and pro-Hitler remarks, White Lives Matter shirts and comments about George Floyd.

“Let’s talk about Kanye being antisemitic, the adidas deal that made him a billionaire got deaded / Now he only worth ’bout four, five hundred M’s / He lost his momma, Pete Davidson started fucking Kim / He be dressing dusty now, he don’t even look rich / He been looking stressed since that white boy took his bitch,” Murda raps over a soulful, hard-hitting beat.

“You already know JAY-Z be ignoring him, he violated George Floyd, Black people ain’t supporting him / He was on ‘Drink Champs’ sounding like a fucking clown / N.O.R.E. and them had to go and take the interview down / He defended the cop that had George Floyd on the ground, he say dumb shit whenever there’s a camera around / And it’s like he say this shit without no hesitation, his friends need to make sure he taking his medication,” he continues.

“Maybe he ain’t crazy and that’s really how he feel / Lately he keep taking shots at Diddy and Meek Mill / No more Yeezys, no more Balenciaga deals / Banned from Instagram, damn, that n-gga gotta chill / Fuck Donkey of the Day, he Donkey of the Year, bro / Even Pusha T had to cut ties with that weirdo / He did it to himself, I really don’t understand that n-gga / What the fuck would make him go and say he a fan of Hitler? / He confused, Kanye want to be a cracker / That n-gga made T-shirts saying ‘White Lives Matter.’”

A post shared by Lenny Grant (@unclemurda)

Uncle Murda also has harsh words for Gunna, who was recently released from jail after taking a plea deal in the RICO case against his and Young Thug’s YSL (Young Slime Life) collective. Murda joins the chorus of critics accusing him of snitching on Thug to secure his freedom, labeling him the “new 6ix9ine.”

“Young Thug and Gunna got with the RICO, they using rap lyrics against them and that shit is illegal / They let Gunna go, we tryna figure out how that happened / He took a plea deal, Lil Boosie said that n-gga ratting / Gunna pushing pleas, Young Thug still stuck in jail / N-ggas saying Gunna knew names and ‘I’m gonna tell,’” he spits.

“Until we know all the facts we shouldn’t speak on that / If Thug ain’t tell him to take that deal then he a rat / He was on ‘Crime Stoppers’ before looking bad / He the new 6ixine on the ‘Gram, shit is sad / We saw that video of him in court, he a yes man / Is YSL a gang? That n-gga said, ‘Yes ma’am.’”

He adds: “‘Yes ma’am, I know about crimes that they committed, that was Jeffery’s stuff in that car when y’all caught me in it’ / You can plead the Fifth on certain shit but that don’t matter / You got Charleston White calling you his favorite new rapper / You ain’t have to take that deal, my n-gga, free the Slime / You ain’t do shit, you wasn’t facing no real time.”

The G-Unit affiliate has plenty to say about Hip Hop’s other major legal story from 2022: the Tory Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion trial, which resulted in Tory being found guilty of shooting Megan in the feet in July 2020.

Murda goes in on Megan for admitting on the witness stand that she lied about her relationship with Tory prior to the shooting and sabotaging the rapper’s apparent efforts to hook up with Kylie Jenner at the fateful party that night.

Freddie Gibbs Reacts To Uncle Murda’s Slanderous ‘Rap Up’ Bars As Akademiks Fans The Flames

While stating his belief that Tory was done dirty and a mistrial should have been called, Murda also slams Lanez for his apology phone call to Megan’s former friend and assistant, Kelsey Harris, from jail, which reportedly convinced the jury that he was guilty.

“Tory Lanez and Megan trial was like a soap opera / Still don’t know if Tory Lanez or that girl Kelsey hot her / But we know Megan lied about fucking Tory / And she get drunk like she on ‘Drink Champs’ with N.O.R.E. / And we know her and DaBaby was intimate, it’s embarrassing for her man hearing about who was hitting it,” he raps.

“Imagine when he fucking now, what he be thinking about? On top of that, she got kicked out of Kylie Jenner house / Tory could have fucked Kylie if Megan wasn’t hating / Wonder how Travis Scott feel about that situation / Tory got found guilty, they did him foul / Too many inconsistencies, should have been a mistrial.”

He continues: “As far as DNA being on that gun, his was not / A witness said they saw a female take the first shot / They was all drunk and high, shit just went too far / Megan should have never made Tory get in that car / Now we gotta try to unpack a whole lot of shit / Kelsey could have shot her just like how Remy shot a bitch.

“I’m just saying y’all acting like that shit is impossible / I ain’t picking sides, I’m just trying to be logical / Tory Lanez father blaming JAY-Z and Roc Nation / JAY-Z ain’t tell your son to go and shoot Megan / He an independent artist, he make his own decisions / He might get deported after he do his time in prison / He can win the appeal but he need a lot of help / If him or Kelsey ain’t do it then that bitch shot herself.

“Why Tory call that girl from a phone in prison / Knowing they record them calls and was gon’ listen? / He supposed to know better, people was uncertain / Now it’s looking like they convicted the right person.”

Elsewhere in the sprawling lyrical recap, Uncle Murda tackles Will Smith’s Oscars slap on Chris Rock, Diddy and Yung Miami’s “single-but-dating” relationship, the deaths of TakeOff, PnB Rock and DJ Kay Slay, Freddie Gibbs’ Buffalo beatdown, Master P and Romeo Miller’s (since-resolved) family feud and much more.

Listen to “Rap Up 2022” and check out more highlights below:

On Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars:

“Will Smith really went and smacked the shit out of Chris Rock / He laughed at the joke at first ’til he saw his wife’s demeanor / Chris Rock ain’t no Jada was bald because of alopecia / That’s something the majority of people knew nothing about / But I bet you he won’t put his name back in his fucking mouth.”

On Tory Lanez allegedly assaulting August Alsina:

Logic Cooks Up In The Studio With Actor Rainn Wilson A.K.A. Dwight From ‘The Office’

Logic is no stranger to working with some of the finest names in movies and TV, but his latest non-musical collaborator may catch even his biggest fans by surprise.

In a video uploaded to Instagram on Saturday (December 31), the Maryland-bred lyricist gave fans a sneak peek at a studio session with actor Rainn Wilson, who’s best known for playing Dwight Schrute in The Office.

“My man is making beats right now, and he’s really snapping,” Logic says in the clip before turning the camera to Wilson, who can be seen tapping away on an MPC in the rapper’s home studio as a jazzy boom bap beat plays in the background.

“You may be Black,” Logic jokes, to which Wilson replies: “Right?!” with a comedic shrug.

“Look who stopped by to cook some beets,” the Bobby Tarantino rapper added in his caption, playing off Dwight’s love of the vegetable in the popular NBC sitcom.

Logic and Wilson’s unlikely cook-up session was met with excitement by some of the former’s rap peers such as Lex Luger, Nems and MadeinTYO.

“Wooooowww!!! [fire emojis] he’s definitely my fav on the office now,” Luger commented on the post, while Nems added: “My guy DWIGHT … legendary.”

A post shared by Logic (@logic)

Logic isn’t the only Office fan in Hip Hop. Dwight Schrute has also been referenced in songs by Paul Wall, Michael Christmas and Das Racist, while Childish Gambino, Post Malone and LUCKI have namedropped Steve Carell’s character, Michael Scott.

While it remains to be seen whether any music will come from his studio session with Rainn Wilson, Logic is still looking to work with more conventional names. Back in November, the 32-year-old revealed he’s down to do a joint album with producer extraordinaire The Alchemist.

“Of course @Alchemist is one of the greatest producers of all time. it would be an honor,” he tweeted in response to a fan asking about a potential collaboration between the two. “Al… we could finish an album in a weekend brother. lets do it!!!!”

Logic has also teased a full-length project with Madlib, which has spawned a handful of early singles. But as he told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe last year, the Bandana beatmaker’s inability to remember the samples (owing to a shrooms trip) has put the brakes on its release.

Logic Crowned Best ‘Rap Artist In The Game Right Now’ By Zac Efron

“We did that in a weekend and Egon [Alapatt, Madlib’s former business partner] sent me basically every Madlib beat that he’s ever done,” he explained. “I mean, gigs and gigs and gigs from 2005. I went through and made my perfect album of all my favorite beats, then I just rapped on them all.”

He continued: “Madlib comes over and he’s like, ‘Yo, Bobby, this is crazy.’ I was like, ‘Really? You like it?’ He’s like, ‘I love it.’ I’m like, ‘Wow!’ He’s like, ‘There’s just one thing … I don’t remember any of these fucking samples. We can’t clear it. I was on mushrooms 15 years ago when I made this beat. I don’t know.’”

One album that didn’t suffer from behind-the-scenes delays was Vinyl Days, Logic’s star-studded seventh studio album which arrived in July 2022. The project was recorded in just 12 days and marked his final release on Def Jam Records, with whom he had been vocal about his frustrations over the years.

“That’s my favorite part – I’m off Def Jam,” he said on Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast following its release. “I made that album so I could leave, and guess what? I left them with some of the dopest shit I could give them. It’s not like I just wiped my ass. What am I excited about? I’m excited to be independent, I’m excited to do my thing.”

He added: “I’m really happy to know that I represented and low-key was the face of the label — one of the illest Hip Hop labels of all time — and that I sold millions and millions of records and gave them billions and billions of streams, and that it was a good partnership. And I couldn’t be happier to get the fuck out.”

Gangsta Boo Has Reportedly Died Aged 43

Gangsta Boo has died in her hometown of Memphis, HipHopDX has confirmed. Details surrounding the circumstances of her death are scarce.

According to local news affiliate Fox 13 Memphis, the Queen of Memphis, born Lola Mitchell, was found dead around 4:00 p.m. local time on Sunday afternoon (January 1).

As news of the Memphis Rap pioneer’s death began spreading via social media, DJ Paul posted a photo of his former Three 6 Mafia group mate, which many took as confirmation of her death.

Gangsta Boo was 43 years old.

A post shared by DJ Paul K.O.M. Three 6 Mafia (@djpaulkom)

Several members of the Hip Hop community, including 2Chainz, B-Real, Lil Jon and fellow Memphis artist Duke Deuce shared their disbelief and condolences in the post’s comments section.

“Long Live The Queen,” the Duke Deuce wrote, later echoing the sentiment on Twitter with a clip of Gangsta Boo joining him on stage to perform his hit single “Crunk Ain’t Dead.”

Missy Elliott, who Gangsta Boo recently told Billboard was on her list of dream collaborators, shared a photo of the Memphis legend with the caption, “Rest Peacefully @GangstaBooQOM.” Friends including El-P and Freddie Gibbs offered more personal tributes.

“Love you Lola thank you for your friendship,” the Run The Jewels rapper wrote; while Gibbs shared a recent photo the two took, revealing they had just spent time together.

HipHopDX has reached out to Gangsta Boo and DJ Paul representatives, as well as the Memphis Police Department for additional information on this developing story.

Joining the group in 1994 at the tender age of 15, Gangsta Boo made her name alongside the Grammy Award winning group Three 6 Mafia. Following the release of her debut solo album Enquiring Minds in 1998, she became a household name across the South and beyond, thanks to the hit single “Where Dem Dollas At!?”

After leaving Three 6 Mafia over alleged financial disputes in 2002, Gangsta Boo was quiet on the music front for a number of years, before returning with a number of scattered singles starting in 2017. Her run had been much more consistent of late, with the past four years seeing the “Yeah Hoe” rapper release no less than three singles each year.

In addition to returning to her own solo releases, Gangsta Boo has also made a number of guest appearances over the past few years, most recently appearing on Latto’s “F.T.C.U.” alongside Memphis newcomer Glorilla.

Remembering The Rappers We Lost In 2022

“Latto has been showing me support for a while. I always see her mentioning my name when they ask her who were some of her inspirations, and she told me that her dad used to support a lot of female rappers and I was one of them,” Gangsta Boo told Billboard. “So, that’s kind of how it came about. We just started following each other on the Internet and supporting each other and s—. And yeah, she hit me up last minute. She was like, “Man, I smoked a blunt and had a genius idea.”

She added: “She’s like, ‘The song already done, we already did the video and s— but I want you to be on the outro, the intro or some sort of adlibs.’ I was like, ‘Of course, Latto. I got you, man.’ It was simple just like that. Of course, I would’ve wanted to spit and kill on that mother — but just anytime I can contribute and support any female rapper that I like, that like me back, I’m always down for it.”

HipHopDX extends its condolences to Gangsta Boo’s loved ones. See more of the Hip Hop community’s tributes below.

Yo Gotti & Angela Simmons Make Relationship Official With Romantic New Year’s Eve Photoshoot

Yo Gotti and Angela Simmons are heading into 2023 as an official item.

The Memphis rap mogul and daughter of Run-DMC legend Rev Run confirmed their long-rumored relationship with a romantic New Year’s Eve photoshoot on Saturday (December 31).

Gotti posted a video on Instagram showing Simmons in a black dress and evening gloves posing next to a Rolls-Royce. “You looking good,” he tells the Growing Up Hip Hop star after wishing her a happy New Year, to which she replies: “Mmmm thanks.”

The clip then cuts to the couple in the back of the luxury ride toasting to 2023 over a glass of champagne. “Ain loss a crush since High School,” Gotti captioned the post, which was soundtracked by Lil Baby and Fridayy’s “Forever.”

The CMG boss also showed his gentleman side by posting a photo of him escorting Angela Simmons out of the car and holding an umbrella over her head, followed by a shot of him squeezing her derrière with both hands as they share a kiss.

Simmons also made their relationship Instagram official by sharing a series of flicks from their photoshoot. One post captured them looking every bit the power couple as they posed inside and next to their Rolls-Royce on their way to a New Year’s Eve party.

“You are all I need and more,” she wrote in the caption.

Gotti and Simmons rang in the New Year by watching fireworks on a boat, as seen in footage posted on their respective Instagram Stories.

Yo Gotti and Angela Simmons have been romantically linked for years, with Gotti famously professing his love for the model/reality TV star on his 2015 hit “Down in the DM.”

“And I just followed Angela (Simmons) / Boy, I got a crush on Angela Simmons / They like, ‘Damn Gotti, you bold’ / Fuck it, I’m gon’ let the world know (goals),” he rapped on the song, which peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The CM10 rapper also lusted over Simmons on his 2017 “Save It For Me” collaboration with Chris Brown, admitting her engagement to Sutton Tennyson at the time only made him want her more.

“Passed my number to Angela / I thought I had her / Her n-gga cuffed her, married, it made me madder/ I respect it, I’m moving on, but the truth is I want her badder / Maybe me sayin’ her name made him move faster,” he spit.

Bow Wow Tells Angela Simmons To Start An OnlyFans After Posting Bikini Pic

Simmons and Tennyson, who share a six-year-old son, called off their engagement later that year. Tennyson was shot and killed in November 2018 after an argument with another man outside his home allegedly escalated.

Rumors surrounding Yo Gotti and Simmons intensified in September when the pair were spotted partying together at a nightclub for Simmons’ 35th birthday, where she rapped along to “Down in the DM.”

Their blossoming romance was all but confirmed in November when Simmons posted a photo of her sharing an intimate moment with a mystery man — whose face was covered by a red heart emoji — at a party.

Internet detectives discovered the man’s outfit was the same one Yo Gotti was wearing, while the party was reportedly thrown by the CMG mogul for his mother’s birthday.
